Why clothes smell sour after washing

Check the process in order
- Before washing: do not leave sweaty or wet clothing sealed in a hamper.
- During washing: avoid overloading and use the cycle specified by the garment and appliance instructions.
- Detergent: use the measured dose for the water and soil level; residue can trap odor.
- After washing: transfer promptly and dry completely before folding.
- Washer: clean accessible components and run maintenance only as the manual directs.
If only some garments smell
Synthetic athletic fabrics, heavy seams and elastic areas may retain body oils or dry slowly. Separate these items for a care-label-safe cycle and allow more airflow. Persistent odor in one damaged or heavily contaminated item may not justify repeatedly treating the entire load.
Storage check
Place one completely dry garment in a clean, ventilated location and another in the usual drawer. If only the stored item develops odor, clean and dry the storage area and avoid packing it tightly.

Run a two-load comparison
- Wash a small control load of ordinary colorfast items using measured detergent and the care-label-safe cycle.
- Dry it immediately and completely, then keep half in an open clean area and half in the normal storage location.
- Repeat the usual load without changing several variables at once.
