Convert wall and ceiling area into full drywall sheets with an adjustable waste factor. Use the result as a planning estimate, then verify board size and local installation requirements.
Formula
Board area = wall area + optional ceiling − openings. Sheets = board area × (1 + waste) ÷ sheet area, rounded up.

Example
For a simple 12 × 10 ft room, walls plus ceiling can exceed 450 sq ft before subtracting openings.
Reliability check
Sketch each wall and ceiling separately. Choose sheet orientation only after locating framing, tapered edges, openings and fire- or moisture-rated assemblies; an area total is not a fastening or layout plan.
How to get a better estimate
- Use larger sheets only if access and handling allow it.
- Complex rooms need more waste than simple rectangles.
- Order a small reserve if matching existing thickness or edge type is important.
What the result means
The sheet count is a coverage estimate. Sheet orientation, framing spacing, fire or moisture ratings and offcuts affect the final order. Fasteners must be selected from the actual assembly and local requirements.
