How this calculator works
Estimate sod coverage and round up to whole pieces or rolls based on the coverage sold by your supplier.
Formula
Purchase area = lawn area × (1 + waste). Pieces = purchase area ÷ coverage per piece, rounded up.

Example
A 40 × 25 ft lawn is 1,000 sq ft; with 5% waste, plan for about 1,050 sq ft.
Reliability check
Measure lawn sections separately and subtract permanent beds or paving. Convert the coverage target using the supplier’s exact roll, slab or pallet format before ordering.
How to get a better estimate
- Measure curved areas in smaller shapes and sum them.
- Order and install sod promptly to reduce drying.
- Ask the supplier how many square feet are on each pallet.
What the result means
Sod pieces, mini-rolls, big rolls and pallet quantities vary by supplier. Confirm the sale format and include additional material for curves, damaged pieces and future repairs.
