How this calculator works
Convert rectangular project dimensions into cubic feet and cubic yards, with depth entered in inches for convenience.
Formula
Cubic feet = length × width × (depth ÷ 12). Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27.
Cubic feet = length × width × (depth ÷ 12). Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27.
Example
A 20 × 10 ft area at 3 inches deep equals 50 cubic feet, or about 1.85 cubic yards.
Reliability check
Confirm that every dimension describes the same finished zone and that depth is converted from inches only once. Apply settlement or compaction as a separate project assumption.
How to get a better estimate
- Add project-specific waste or compaction after calculating geometric volume.
- Irregular areas can be split into smaller rectangles.
- Supplier material is often sold by either cubic yard or ton.
What the result means
The result assumes a uniform depth. Settlement, compaction, uneven grade and delivery rounding can require an additional allowance.
